My name is Activate

My name is Activate, and I like to rap. I've been writing, recording, and making beats since 2001. I make music that I think is dope, I release it into the wild, and I hope others agree. I try to make music with as little outside influence as possible, as I want it to be my own unique sound. With that said, Wu-Tang Clan, Redman, and Outkast were who I listened to the most growing up, and that continues to this day. I really enjoy the craft of writing the most interesting rhymes possible, both in terms of aesthetics and meaningful content. I make most of my own beats, and I approach that in the same way. I want to make music that is unique, interesting, clever, meaningful, and refreshingly satisfying.

My Story

In 1996, after a couple years listening to DJ Kazzeo on 90.9FM KHDC, I finally got my first CD player. Already falling in love with rap music, 2pac’s All Eyez On Me, Ice Cube’s Lethal Injection, and Us3’s Hand on the Torch were the first three albums I ever bought. My friend Scott (V-Tech the Vocabulator) introduced me to Wu-Tang Clan and my whole appreciation for rap music skyrocketed. Scott got into improvised freestyling over random beats, and after a while, I found myself trying to keep up. We graduated high school in 2001, began attending Cabrillo Community College, and that’s where we ran into my friend Rick (MCG the Source). Turned out that MCG and a few buddies from high school were not only freestyling, but they were making their own beats, writing actual songs, and recording them in their apartment. MCG, Bill (Caliber), Miquel (Subliminal Mind F*uck), Mike (Cheebs), and Chris (DJ sutchnsutch) were collectively known as Bad Planet Music (BPM). Shortly after making a few songs together, V-Tech and I were anointed as members of the Bad Planet, and that’s how it all began.
